Survive as a backpacker

Rome is often perceived as an expensive city to visit, however as a backpacker you can easily find somewhere to stay, a good meal and some entertainment cheaply. You don’t have to compromise on finding interesting things to do either, the city is full of free and cheap opportunities.

Happy backpacker.

Cheap hostel accommodation

Hostels are often the first port of call for backpackers with dorm rooms starting at around €15 per night. They can get busy though so it is always a good idea to book online in advance of your trip. There are also hundreds of B&Bs and guesthouses in and on the outskirts of the city that can offer you a room, sometimes with a private bathroom for around €20 per night. Staying at a B&B has added advantages, as many of them are people’s houses who are often renting out a room or two, the families generally have good local advice and knowledge about the best places to go and interesting things to see and do.

See the sights

If you are looking for something to do in Rome, many tour operators offer a free walking tour. This is a good way to get around and see the sights along with getting some great local knowledge and history. There’s also a number of museums and galleries with free entry such as The Gallery of the National Academy of San Luca. The Vatican also has free entry on the last Sunday of every month.

Eat where the locals eat

A good rule of thumb if you are eating out in Rome is to eat where the locals eat. Italians have an excellent food heritage and are fiercely proud of their cuisine. In most local cafes you can get a main course for around €10. If you are running short on Euros though, it is worth remembering that most bakeries will throw out any uneaten goods at the end of the day and will happily hand them over to lucky travellers.
