Public transport

Rome is a walking city. Construction in the works to extend the Metro, yet most are doubtful that Rome will ever see an underground system the likes of London, Paris, or New York. The two lines, A and B crisscross at Termini and cover most important areas of the historic centre, as to buses and trams. The farther you get from the heart of the city, the shadier and more sporadic the transport gets. Taxis are exorbitant and night buses (autobus notturno) are few and far between.

Transport is run by ATAC, and tickets for buses, trams, and the Metro cost €1 and are good for 75 minutes (one Metro ride). They must be validated once on board to aboard to avoid hefty fines.

Depending on how long you’re staying, special passes can be worth it.
Roma Pass gets you discounts on all kinds of sites and three days of public transport. The B.I.R.G. passes are unlimited day passed based on zones around Rome. See www.atac.roma.it for details.
