Lazio

One of the original and top teams in Italian football known as Lazio with the full name Societa Sportiva Lazio.  Since 1900 at its founding, this club has been at the top of the football world in Italy.  Besides just being a football club, the society of Lazio actually takes part in thirty seven different sporting endeavors as a more general club.

Lazio was the original football team in Rome and by 1912 the Italian Football Federation began operating and organizing  championships and the formal league in Italy.  Interestingly, Lazio was the only team to successful resist the Fascist attempt to reorganize all football clubs into the team A.S. Roma.  Lazio has a history of several major betting scandals involving the club and for some time throughout the 1980s were bounced out of Serie A.  Though, in the last decade they have made a resurgence back into the top division.

The Stadio Olimpico is the site for Lazio matches and is also the premier venue within Rome.  With a capacity of 72,689 it has served as the site of an Olympics, a World Athletics Championship, a European Championship, the 1990 FIFA World Cup, and the UEFA Champions League Final in 1996 and 2009.

According to research conducted on support of Italian football clubs, Lazio has a 2% following of all fans ranking it 6th overall.  Their biggest supporters are the Irriducibili Lazio which were founded in 1987.  Fans in Italy certainly take after their English counterparts but there are homegrown traditional ultras displays which are popular and still occur.

Their first pre-war victory in the Serie A in 1974 would not be matched again until 1994 and then 1998.  However they were runner-ups in 1936, ’94, and ’98.  All told, Lazio has 11 National titles and 2 European titles to their credit.
